McLaren Unveils New Hypercar Name for FIA WEC: MCL-HY
McLaren Racing has officially named its forthcoming LMDh Hypercar, set to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship starting in 2027, as the ‘MCL-HY’. This moniker aligns with McLaren’s established Formula 1 naming conventions, combining the ‘MCL’ prefix with the designation ‘HY’ for Hypercar.
Additionally, McLaren’s track-only variant for ‘Project Endurance’ has been designated as the ‘MCL-HY GTR’. This name honors McLaren’s storied history in customer racing, following the legacy of the McLaren F1 GTR, which achieved outright victory at Le Mans in 1995, as well as the P1 GTR and the Senna GTR.
James Barclay, Executive Director of McLaren Endurance Racing, remarked, “Taking the McLaren name back to the pinnacle of sportscar racing is a huge milestone… Our new car name shows respect to that.” He further teased the upcoming vehicle’s “incredibly cool test livery,” which will be showcased ahead of its initial rollout.
The unveiling of both the MCL-HY and its track variant is scheduled for May 4th, with indications that the race car will feature significant modifications from the show car presented at Le Mans last year.
This announcement underscores McLaren’s commitment to returning to high-level sportscar competition during what Barclay describes as “a golden era of sportscar racing.”
