IMSA Monterey SportsCar Championship Preview: Bobby Rahal Named Grand Marshal Amid Team Transitions
Bobby Rahal, a five-time winner at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and part-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), will serve as the Grand Marshal for the upcoming IMSA Monterey SportsCar Championship. His selection underscores his enduring legacy in motorsports, particularly within the IMSA framework.
RLL is currently navigating organizational changes, with Jay Frye recently appointed as President. This comes at a crucial time as uncertainty looms regarding RLL’s future in IMSA post-2025, stemming from the expiration of their agreement to field BMW’s M Hybrid V8 prototypes at the end of this year.
When questioned about the future partnership with BMW, Rahal maintained a measured tone, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the current season while acknowledging the lengthy history shared with the manufacturer since 2008. “We’re obviously hoping to continue this long relationship,” he stated. He added that with three-quarters of the season remaining, the team and BMW Motorsport are concentrating solely on upcoming races.
Despite not securing a race victory, RLL has enjoyed a strong start to the 2023 season with three pole positions, indicating competitive potential. Rahal noted that issues during races—such as difficulties with lap traffic and pit stops—have hindered race day results, but he remains optimistic about achieving a win at Laguna Seca based on the team’s prior performance.
Frye’s recent tenure as President began at Long Beach, where he aims to bring fresh strategies to the team, particularly in IndyCar, but also for their GTP program in IMSA. Rahal expressed confidence in Frye’s leadership, highlighting his extensive experience in NASCAR and IndyCar, which is expected to bolster RLL’s competitive edge.
“Jay brings a different perspective and experience in various categories,” Rahal remarked, while also recognizing the contributions of his predecessor, Steve Eriksen. As the season progresses, Rahal is hopeful that Frye’s strong relationships within the industry will further solidify RLL’s position in both series.
With the IMSA series rapidly approaching, the focus now shifts to Laguna Seca, where RLL aims to capitalize on their current momentum and reestablish their winning ways.
