Will Power Returns to Endurance Racing at Indianapolis 8 Hour
Indianapolis, IN – Two-time IndyCar Series champion Will Power is set to make a significant return to endurance racing this weekend at the Indianapolis 8 Hour Presented by AWS. Driving the #75 Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO alongside co-driver Chaz Mostert and Team WRT’s Valentino Rossi, Power brings a wealth of experience from open-wheel racing but significantly less from endurance formats, his last being at the 2003 Bathurst 24 Hours.
Power, 44, expressed his initial trepidation, stating, “I didn’t know how I’d be. My first run, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this thing feels strange!’” He noted the challenges of adapting to a closed-cockpit car after years in open-wheel formats. However, the Australian has rapidly adjusted, recording competitive lap times comparable to seasoned Mercedes-AMG Performance Drivers during practice.
Power’s strategy includes leveraging his extensive knowledge of the Indianapolis road course, having previously won five IndyCar races there. His focus, he stated, is to help teammate Kenny Habul in the IGTC Independent Cup chase. Habul, a veteran who can secure points in the Pro category, is currently facing a six-point deficit.
With significant changes ahead in his IndyCar career—moving from Team Penske to Andretti Global next season—Power hinted at the possibility of continuing in endurance racing, including ambitions for prestigious events like the Rolex 24 and Le Mans. “I’ve gotta be very focused and have no distractions, but there’d be a chance to do it with Kenny,” Power commented.
As the eight-hour race looms, Power is cognizant of endurance racing’s unique challenges, particularly regarding visibility and overtaking. “You lose a lot of front and overall grip when following other cars. I think figuring out how to get by will be crucial during the race,” he stated.
While this weekend marks a pivotal moment in Power’s career, he remains committed to adding diverse skills to his racing repertoire. The race is set for Saturday, with both Power and the entire #75 team hopeful for a strong performance.
