Zilisch Returns to Track at Daytona Amid Championship Setback
Daytona Beach, FL — Connor Zilisch made his highly anticipated return to competitive driving on Saturday, participating in the IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona International Speedway. This marked his first outing since a disappointing finish in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series finale at Phoenix Raceway, where he lost the championship title.
Driving the #31 Cadillac Whelen V-Series.R for Action Express Racing, Zilisch completed 33 laps during a three-and-a-half-hour morning session, primarily using used Michelin tires. “It was awesome,” Zilisch remarked, expressing his excitement about the V8/hybrid-powered car, which he described as a blend of his previous experiences with LMP2 and GT3 vehicles. “A little heavier than the P2, more power. But really cool,” he added.
Missing the championship at Phoenix not only cost Zilisch the title but also the opportunity to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship rookie test in Bahrain due to insufficient points for an FIA A License. Despite the setback, Zilisch’s past achievements—winning the 2024 Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Twelve Hours of Sebring in the LMP2 class—underscore his talent.
Support from fans and fellow drivers following the Phoenix race provided Zilisch with renewed motivation. “It made me feel a little bit better about what happened in Phoenix,” he admitted. “But it was nice to see a bunch of people backing me up.”
As he prepared for the afternoon session, Zilisch focused on acclimating to the Cadillac’s unique handling characteristics. “It’s definitely heavier steering than a NASCAR… The GTP cars have a lot of controls that you have to know,” he remarked.
Zilisch’s performance in Saturday’s test will determine his inclusion in the January Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, alongside established teammates Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, and Frederik Vesti. As of the end of the final night session, Zilisch will learn if he has secured a seat.
Concluding his thoughts, Zilisch shared the significance of racing at Daytona, stating, “It’s something that I dreamed of as a kid… I’m just excited for the opportunity to be here today and test the car.”
The next steps for Zilisch will be crucial as he aims for a spot in one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world.
