Adakonis Claims Maiden Pole in MX-5 Cup Qualifying at VIR
In a suspenseful qualifying session for Round 11 of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin, rookie Justin Adakonis (No. 23 McCumbee McAleer Racing) secured his first series pole position at VIRginia International Raceway.
The session was marred by a red flag due to a multi-car incident, limiting drivers to a single flying lap during the 20-minute session. Adakonis capitalized on this opportunity, posting the fastest time as competitors wrapped up their laps.
“I tried to find some good track position and luckily I was able to do that. It feels so amazing. We’ve been so close all year and have had such bad luck. It’s good to finally be up here and hopefully we can keep it going for the race,” Adakonis stated post-qualifying.
He will be joined on the front row by teammate Nate Cicero (No. 83 McCumbee McAleer Racing). Current points leader Nathan Nicholson (No. 56 Advanced Autosports) will start from the 10th position.
The 45-minute race is set to commence at 5:55 p.m. ET, with live coverage available on the RACER and IMSA YouTube channels.
