McLaren Claims Constructors’ Title Amid Tensions Between Drivers
Singapore – McLaren secured its constructors’ championship at the Singapore Grand Prix, clinching the title with three races left in the season. However, internal tensions between drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri emerged as a notable subplot during the event.
Norris and Piastri’s close encounter at Turn 3 stirred controversy, with Piastri questioning team dynamics after the race. Following light contact, Piastri expressed frustration over perceived leniency toward Norris, stating, “That wasn’t very team-like… Are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way?” The incident stemmed from Norris attempting to overtake and inadvertently clipping the rear of Max Verstappen’s car, resulting in the two McLarens coming together.
Norris defended his actions: “The start was good… I got across and put myself in a good position… I think I just clipped the back of Max’s car, which gave me a little correction.” He emphasized that his aggressive positioning was necessary for making up positions in a track where overtaking proved challenging.
Despite the fracas, combined finishes of third for Norris and fourth for Piastri secured the constructors’ title, leading to post-race celebrations. Team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged the need for a review of the incident but prioritized maintaining a positive team spirit: “We will have good conversations, and like after Canada, we’ll come back stronger.”
Stella addressed the undercurrents of driver dynamics, stating, “Our review needs to be very detailed… There are many elements to take into account, and we must be careful not to jump to conclusions.”
Piastri later affirmed his belief in equitable treatment between drivers despite recognizing the challenges of the evolving situation, remarking, “I think there’s obviously been some difficult situations… It’s a learning process with the whole team.”
As McLaren celebrates its constructors’ championship, the focus now shifts to how it will navigate the relationship between its talented, yet competitive, driver lineup amidst a tightening championship race.
