Genesis Magma Racing Shines with Historic Pole Position at Barcelona
Genesis Magma Racing (GMR) has made a significant mark in its inaugural LMDh season, achieving its first overall pole position in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Mathys Jaubert, at just 21 years old, has become the youngest pole-setter in WEC history, securing the top spot during the Hyperpole shootout, despite describing his lap as “a little messy.”
Since debuting at Imola, GMR has demonstrated impressive progress, with both GMR-001 cars finishing their first race and subsequently earning championship points at Spa and completing the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours. The pole position in Barcelona not only underscores the team’s capabilities but also validates its approach to developing young talent, as emphasized by team principal Cyril Abiteboul.
“This is a benchmark track, and delivering this performance here is crucial,” Abiteboul stated, highlighting the team’s upward trajectory. “Mathys has been with us since day one, and building our program around him was a daring choice that has proven worthwhile.”
As GMR heads into the race weekend, challenges loom, including potential rain and operational errors from previous events. Teammate Andre Lotterer noted that Jaubert’s achievement signals GMR’s serious intentions to compete at the highest level.
With the introduction of a new Michelin wet tire compound for the weekend, GMR’s adaptability will be tested. While anticipation builds, today’s pole serves as a testament to the potential of Genesis Magma Racing as a formidable contender in the Hypercar category.
