Toyota’s GR GT3 Race Car Development on Schedule for 2027 Launch
Toyota’s anticipated GR GT3 race car is confirmed to be on track, dispelling early concerns about potential delays. The new model, which will carry the GR branding rather than Toyota, is set to succeed the Lexus RC F GT3, with first races planned for 2027.
Competition Plans:
- ROOKIE Racing will spearhead the GR GT3’s debut in Japan’s GT300 class at the concluding events of the SUPER GT and Super Taikyu series at Mobility Resort Motegi and Fuji Speedway.
- A test vehicle will be fielded by Vasser Sullivan Racing at the IMSA test in December, with participation in the GTD Pro and GTD classes of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship confirmed for the 2027 season. The Rolex 24 at Daytona is planned as the US debut for the car.
International Entries:
The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will see two GR GT3s entered by Akkodis ASP for the full season, although independent testing remains pending. Additionally, KCMG is looking to finalize a program, expected to include races in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie (NLS) and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
Customer Production:
Toyota is required to manufacture 20 units within two years of the car’s homologation to meet GT3 regulations. Consequently, established SUPER GT teams such as K-tunes Racing and SHADE Racing will not be able to compete with the GR GT3 until at least 2028.
This strategic deployment of the GR GT3 underscores Toyota’s commitment to its racing legacy, signaling a new era in competitive motorsports for the brand.
