Mohammed Ben Sulayem Re-elected as FIA President in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan – Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been re-elected as president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for a second term, as announced during the FIA General Assembly. Ben Sulayem, who ran unopposed, was confirmed in a formality following the withdrawal of competitors Tim Mayer, Laura Villars, and Virginie Philippot.
The lack of viable candidates stemmed from complications regarding the approval of vice presidential candidates from South America. This situation arose as only one candidate, Fabiana Ecclestone, was available and aligned with Ben Sulayem, preventing the formation of a complete presidential list by November’s deadline.
Despite ongoing legal challenges from Villars, which are set to continue into February, Ben Sulayem’s re-election was validated, securing his position for another four years. “Thank you to all our FIA members for voting in remarkable numbers and placing your trust in me once again,” Ben Sulayem stated. He expressed his commitment to advancing motorsport and mobility on a global scale.
In his new term, Ben Sulayem’s leadership team includes Carmelo Sanz de Barros as president of the senate, Timothy Shearman as deputy president for automobile mobility and tourism, and Malcolm Wilson as deputy president for sport. Under his leadership, the FIA has transitioned from a €24 million loss in 2021 to a projected operating surplus of €4.4 million for 2025, marking a significant organizational turnaround.
