Shaila-Ann Rao Rejoins FIA as Presidential Advisor
Paris, France — The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has confirmed the appointment of Shaila-Ann Rao as presidential advisor, effective May 1, 2025. Rao returns to the FIA after her previous roles as legal director and interim secretary general for motorsport.
Rao’s reintegration into the FIA follows her tenure at Mercedes and her controversial involvement in the cost cap investigation into Red Bull Racing. Her involvement drew scrutiny due to her prior relationship with a rival team, complicating her leadership role in regulatory matters before her exit at the end of 2022 amid allegations against FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Rao’s new responsibilities will include advising on regulatory and commercial matters across the FIA’s seven world championships. In a statement, Rao expressed enthusiasm for contributing to the FIA’s ongoing organizational transformation and enhancing its regulatory frameworks.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, welcomed her back, citing her extensive experience in global motorsport as a valuable asset for the organization. "She will help us improve the regulatory and commercial frameworks benefiting drivers, teams, and member clubs," Ben Sulayem stated.
Rao’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the FIA, as it anticipates a positive operational result of €2.2 million for 2024, a significant rebound from a €24 million deficit in 2021. Despite facing recent controversies—including attempts to regulate driver conduct and governance issues within Formula 1—Ben Sulayem aims to solidify his position ahead of upcoming elections.
Rao’s statement highlighted her commitment to supporting the FIA’s mission, noting the federation’s unique role in global motorsport and her goal to strengthen the FIA’s future. As the organization faces scrutiny and internal challenges, her expertise will be pivotal in navigating the complexities of the motorsport regulatory landscape.
For further developments, stay tuned as the FIA prepares for a transformative period under Rao’s guidance and Ben Sulayem’s leadership.
