Lewis Hamilton’s early connection with McLaren is set to resurface as one of his MP4-12C supercars heads to auction next month. The vehicle, which Hamilton helped develop during his tenure with the team from 2007 to 2012, is anticipated to fetch up to £190,000 at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este auction hosted by Broad Arrow.
Hamilton, who claimed his maiden Formula 1 title with McLaren in 2008, played a pivotal role in refining the MP4-12C, the brand’s first supercar since the 1990s. His insights focused on steering responsiveness and paddle shifter design, with modifications incorporated into the production models, which debuted in 2011.
The MP4-12C features a 592hp twin-turbo V8, showcasing F1-derived engineering principles, including a lightweight carbon fiber chassis and innovative gearbox technology. In recognition of his contributions, Hamilton received one of the initial production models, noted for its striking red finish—a nod to his aspiration of racing for Ferrari.
This particular vehicle, now available for bidding, has accumulated nearly 5,000 miles over 12 years. It will be accompanied in the auction by a similar model previously owned by Hamilton’s teammate, Jenson Button, expected to sell for around £125,000.
As the auction approaches, enthusiasts and collectors are poised to witness a unique blend of motorsport legacy and automotive excellence, with Hamilton’s input exemplifying the crossover between F1 and road car technology.
