Oscar Piastri Reflects on Radio Message Ahead of British Grand Prix
As the Formula 1 circuit approaches the British Grand Prix, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri addressed his recent radio message that echoed his historical tensions with Alpine during the Austrian Grand Prix. Piastri’s remark — that "Alpine still managed to find a way to f*ck me over all these years later" — resurfaced discussions about the circumstances that led him to McLaren.
This comment referenced a pivotal moment from 2022 when Alpine prematurely announced Piastri as Fernando Alonso’s successor, a claim he swiftly denied on social media, stating, "This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year." This incident has since become a significant chapter in F1 folklore.
In a press conference ahead of the British Grand Prix, Piastri addressed the radio moment, clarifying, "It was just a coincidence that qualifying was obviously an Alpine and then I kind of got impeded by both in the race to an extent." He also noted, "I haven’t thought about it for over 12 months probably," indicating a shift in focus from his tumultuous past with Alpine.
During the recent Austrian race, Piastri experienced notable frustration, being forced off the track by Franco Colapinto amidst a heated battle with Yuki Tsunoda, and later impeded by Pierre Gasly. Despite these challenges, Piastri has thrived at McLaren, with the team currently leading the constructors’ standings. He holds a 15-point lead in the drivers’ championship over teammate Lando Norris as the grid heads to Silverstone, marking a significant turnaround in his career trajectory.
Piastri’s adaptability and performance in recent races underscore his resilience and determination, positioning him as a formidable competitor as the season progresses.
