Sauber’s Strategic Shift Ahead of Audi Partnership: Jonathan Wheatley’s Vision
Jonathan Wheatley, newly appointed team principal of Sauber, is determined to instill a big-team mentality as the outfit prepares for its transition to Audi in 2026. Despite currently sitting at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive season, Wheatley is focused on developing a competitive foundation.
Wheatley, who previously held a successful tenure at Red Bull Racing, brings invaluable experience from championship-winning environments at Renault and Red Bull. He acknowledges the challenges inherent in transforming Sauber, emphasizing that substantial improvements will take "years" to materialize.
In an interview on Beyond The Grid, Wheatley remarked on the contrasting atmospheres between Red Bull and Sauber, highlighting the need for defined operational structures that a larger team demands. He noted, “The way you think as a big team compared with being a smaller team is very, very different.”
Wheatley detailed the current limitations faced by Sauber, particularly in staffing and infrastructure, stating, “The biggest issue we face is that headcounts are increasing and office space isn’t.” However, he assured that plans for expansion are underway to foster a more conducive working environment.
Emphasizing the importance of team culture, Wheatley asserted, “Quality over quantity is crucial. If the team has the right mental attitude and energy, we can achieve remarkable results.” He recognizes that fostering this culture within all departments is essential for long-term success.
Under Wheatley’s leadership, Sauber aims to create a robust organizational framework capable of competing with top teams, setting the stage for Audi’s entry into Formula 1. The road ahead is challenging, but with strategic implementation and a focus on team cohesion, the future looks promising for the struggling outfit.
