AO Racing Evaluates GTP Move with Caution
AO Racing team principal Gunnar Jeannette confirmed that while discussions regarding a potential transition to IMSA’s GTP category are ongoing, a move in 2026 is highly unlikely. With entry applications set to open imminently, Jeannette stated, “The likelihood of us doing that in 2026 is… while I would not say zero, it is very small.”
Since its debut in 2023, AO Racing has established itself as a competitive force, prompting speculation about its readiness for GTP. However, Jeannette emphasized that careful planning is paramount to ensure the team maintains its success in GTD PRO and LMP2 classes before making any significant changes. He remarked, “Really, the number one thing that we need to make sure… is that we don’t put ourselves in a position that we can’t pull it off.”
Jeannette and team owner PJ Hyett are focused on maintaining the integrity of their existing programs, stating, “We would definitely choose to continue doing ‘status quo’ on our programs than go up to a class or category and be uncompetitive.” In pursuit of a potential GTP entry, they prioritize securing the right manufacturer partnership over simply acquiring a vehicle.
In closing, Jeannette affirmed the team’s commitment to strategic growth, ensuring any future endeavors enhance their competitive edge rather than compromise it.
