Gibson Technology has officially announced a strategic partnership with NISMO, Bosch, and Xtrac to develop the next-generation LMP2 powertrain, set to debut in 2028 and compete through the 2032 season. The new initiative marks a significant evolution in endurance racing, focusing on performance, reliability, and sustainability.
The UK-based supplier secured its role as the next-gen LMP2 engine manufacturer earlier this year in June. Together with Nissan’s NISMO motorsport division, Gibson will design a bespoke 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine featuring direct fuel injection, signifying a departure from the long-standing naturally aspirated V8 platform that Gibson has supplied since 2017.
This partnership revives NISMO’s presence in LMP2 racing, absent since 2016, amid a competitive environment where Toyota has become the base engine supplier for the new LMP3 cars. Gibson’s collaboration aims to integrate modern automotive efficiency with the rigors of endurance racing, offering teams a reliable and cost-effective powertrain solution.
In addition to the engine development, Bosch Motorsport will supply the electronic components, including the ECU, power distribution systems, and a new steering wheel designed by MoTeC, a Bosch subsidiary. Xtrac will contribute by developing a bespoke transverse gearbox, complete with a bellhousing and advanced gearshift system, specifically for the new LMP2 platform.
Gibson’s focus remains on balancing performance with long-term durability, aimed at reducing overall costs for customer teams. Mark Brittan, managing director of Gibson Technology, stated, “We are incredibly proud to be working alongside our technical partners… This exciting project promises to deliver fantastic performance while ensuring costs are kept under control and supply is reliable.”
Further technical specifications for the new powertrain will be disclosed in the upcoming months, with planned participation in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series, and the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours.
