Zilisch Returns to Track at Daytona After Heartbreaking Championship Loss
Connor Zilisch made his long-awaited return to competitive racing on Saturday, taking laps in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac during an IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona International Speedway. This marked Zilisch’s first time in a race car since his dramatic defeat in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series finale at Phoenix Raceway, where a win would have granted him a chance to race in Bahrain.
Driving the Cadillac V-Series.R for Action Express Racing, Zilisch completed 33 laps in a morning session predominantly utilizing used Michelin tires. “It was awesome,” said Zilisch, reflecting on the experience. He characterized the V8/hybrid vehicle as a blend of the LMP2 and GT3 cars he had previously driven, citing its heavier weight and increased power as notable characteristics.
Despite enduring the disappointment of missing the championship and consequently, the FIA A License test in Bahrain, Zilisch expressed gratitude for the support he received from fans and peers. “It made me feel a little bit better about what happened in Phoenix,” he stated, underscoring the motivational boost from the racing community.
Zilisch has impressive credentials, including class victories at the 2024 Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, earned at just 17 years old. He emphasized that Daytona is a suitable testing ground for his first laps in the Cadillac. “It’s relatively simple compared to many tracks, making for a pretty chill first session,” he noted.
During the test, Zilisch focused on adapting to the unique dynamics of the V-Series.R, particularly its steering and braking. “It’s definitely heavier steering than in NASCAR… but I kind of got used to it,” he explained. Additionally, the complex control systems of the GTP cars posed a learning challenge, which he tackled with support from his team and simulator practice.
Zilisch’s opportunity to compete in the upcoming Rolex 24 is contingent on his performance during the test. He will find out by 9 p.m. whether he has secured a seat alongside Cadillac factory drivers and Mercedes-AMG Formula One reserve driver Frederik Vesti.
As he anticipates his potential third start in the Rolex 24, Zilisch is focused on delivering a strong performance in order to contend for outright victory in January. “Racing in the 24 Hour is something I dreamed of as a kid,” he said, encapsulating his passion for the event.
With the motorsports community eagerly watching, Zilisch is determined to maximize this testing opportunity and solidify his place on the grid.
