William Byron Reflects on Las Vegas Incident Ahead of Talladega Race
William Byron is addressing the aftermath of his unfortunate collision with Ty Dillon during the opening race of the Round of 8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. On lap 336, Byron’s championship hopes took a significant hit when he collided with Dillon, who was unexpectedly slowing to enter the pit lane. At the time, Byron was positioned second in the race.
Byron expressed that he experienced a mix of shock and disbelief following the incident. “I wasn’t bitter… I just couldn’t believe it,” he said during a press conference at Talladega Superspeedway. He noted the collision was atypical given the routine nature of pit stops in NASCAR.
In preparation for the Talladega race, Byron emphasized the importance of moving forward. “Yes, there are things that I do off the track that get my mind away from the sport… but it’s really just do the things you’ve been doing,” he stated. He also revealed that he had discussions with crew chief Rudy Fugle about the incident during their return flight from Las Vegas.
The collision resulted in a 36th-place finish for Byron, dropping him below the playoff cutline and resulting in a crucial 19-point swing, as he had entered the race four points above the threshold.
Looking ahead to Talladega, Byron remains optimistic, recalling a strong performance in the spring race at the venue. “So far, I feel good about my preparation,” he added, determined to focus on the upcoming challenges of the NASCAR playoffs.
