Hamlin’s Practice Troubles in Chicago Ahead of NASCAR Cup Race
Denny Hamlin faced significant mechanical issues during practice for the NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago, effectively sidelining him before he could complete a full lap. The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota began smoking and leaked oil shortly after hitting the track, leading to a spin. Although Hamlin avoided a collision, the internal damage was severe enough to end his practice session prematurely.
"We want to be in control as drivers," Hamlin explained to TNT Sports. "You don’t want mechanical issues to stop you from that… We couldn’t even make a pace lap before we blew up." This incident represents a continuation of Hamlin’s struggles during the 2025 season, which has seen him experience multiple DNFs due to mechanical failures, including a fire at Texas Motor Speedway.
Hamlin’s history at Chicago is similarly fraught; after starting from pole in 2023, he crashed on the second lap and finished 11th after battling back. The increased challenges of the street course mean he will start Sunday’s main event from the rear of the field, necessitating a significant effort to navigate through a competitive grid.
With practice time lost and a challenging track ahead, Hamlin’s race strategy will be crucial as he aims to capitalize on any opportunities during the event.
