Hamlin Claims Pole at Pocono as Qualifying Takes Unexpected Turns
Poconos, PA — Denny Hamlin secured his fifth pole position at Pocono Raceway, marking a strong return to form in the NASCAR Cup Series after missing the recent race in Mexico City. The veteran driver posted the fastest lap of 55.567 seconds, demonstrating his continued dominance at the 2.5-mile track, where he boasts a record seven wins.
“I was a little more rested than the field right there, so I was able to get a little more speed,” Hamlin remarked, highlighting the synergy between himself and the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team. “We have a great shot to win every week and this team knows what I need out of the car.”
Joining Hamlin on the front row is RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher, who clocked a time just 0.083 seconds shy of the pole. Buescher, a Pocono winner in 2016, expressed enthusiasm about his car’s performance. Carson Hocevar, John-Hunter Nemechek, and Cole Custer rounded out the top five, showcasing strong runs for their respective teams.
Notable Qualifying Developments
Qualifying was marred by significant incidents, leading to four drivers failing to set a time. Brennan Poole’s team faced inspection issues, while Cody Ware crashed during practice, preventing his participation. Josh Berry’s Wood Brothers No. 21 also suffered mechanical problems, leading to a delayed repair. Bubba Wallace faced a start failure with his No. 23 Toyota, culminating in visible frustration as his crew attempted a push start to no avail.
William Byron, who had been a top contender, spun out and impacted the inside wall during his run, forcing him to a backup car. His incident not only jeopardized his qualifying position but also disrupted teammate Chase Elliott’s lap. Elliott, however, managed to qualify 18th after a late tire change, the highest among Hendrick Motorsports drivers, while Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman qualified 24th and 25th, respectively.
Shane van Gisbergen, fresh off his victory in Mexico City, qualified 23rd—matching his best effort of the season on an oval track.
As the teams prepare for the main event, the dynamics of the starting grid promise an intriguing race at Pocono.
