Denny Hamlin Faces Back-to-Back DNFs at Kansas Speedway
Denny Hamlin endured a challenging race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, suffering his second consecutive DNF due to mechanical failures, a rare occurrence in his otherwise competitive season. After facing engine issues that resulted in a fire and subsequent retirement at Texas Motor Speedway the previous weekend, Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was once again sidelined by a clutch failure.
Hamlin, who had been running in third place and completed 199 of 267 laps, found himself needing a push start from his pit crew after pit stops following a crash involving Brad Keselowski. His car ultimately succumbed to a transaxle failure, coming to a halt in the pit lane which necessitated being towed back behind the wall. The disheartening end to his race left Hamlin finishing 36th out of 38 cars.
“Yeah, I think eventually just broke the transaxle trying to leave the stall," reflected Hamlin, emphasizing the team’s frustration with consistent performance that has not translated into race finishes.
Despite these setbacks, Hamlin has secured two wins this season, solidifying his spot in the playoffs. However, back-to-back DNFs mark a concerning turn of events, as he hadn’t experienced such failures since 2013—though those were caused by wrecks rather than mechanical issues.
The 42-year-old driver had been enjoying a streak of 21 consecutive races finishing on the lead lap prior to these incidents, highlighting the uncharacteristic nature of his recent challenges.
