Denny Hamlin’s Race Ends in Oil Fire at Texas Motor Speedway
Denny Hamlin faced an early exit from the NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, finishing 38th after a dramatic oil fire incident. The mishap marked the first DNF of his 2025 season, cutting his day short at just 75 of 267 laps.
Hamlin’s troubles began with an early communication breakdown during a yellow flag situation triggered by a spin from Noah Gragson. While the majority of the field opted for pit stops, Hamlin stayed out due to confusion over team code words, relegating him to the back of the pack. As he attempted to regain lost ground, his No. 11 Toyota Camry began to lose power and ultimately spun out in Turn 1, bursting into flames.
After being checked and released from the infield care center, Hamlin commented, "It (the engine) just missed for three-quarters of the lap before. Other than that, no (warning). Nothing. They’ll take it back and take a look at it."
The race proceeded under caution following the incident, with Austin Cindric securing the stage win and ten valuable bonus points. Shortly after Hamlin’s departure, teammate Chase Briscoe faced his own challenges, damaging the No. 19 car in a crash at Turn 4 but managing to continue.
As the race unfolds, Hamlin’s early exit represents a significant loss for Joe Gibbs Racing, marking the end of an impressive streak of 21 consecutive lead lap finishes.
