Carson Kvapil Set for Championship Showdown in Xfinity Series
Phoenix Raceway – As the NASCAR Xfinity Series heads into its championship weekend, Dale Earnhardt Jr. reaffirms his commitment to rookie driver Carson Kvapil, emphasizing the team’s focus on long-term success.
“I kept telling Kelley and everybody here, ‘My priority is Carson full-time,'” said Earnhardt Jr. reflecting on the team’s strategic decisions. Despite other lucrative opportunities for JR Motorsports, the organization remains devoted to Kvapil’s development.
The 22-year-old Kvapil, son of 2003 Craftsman Truck Series champion Travis Kvapil, will compete for the series championship this weekend in the No. 1 Chevrolet. Earnhardt Jr. confirmed Kvapil’s return for the 2024 season, where he will again seek wins with JR Motorsports.
The organization recently announced the hiring of veteran crew chief Rodney Childers, who will oversee Kvapil’s team. “We had every intention of Carson being a full-time driver,” Earnhardt Jr. clarified. He noted that integrating Childers marks a critical step in Kvapil’s trajectory toward victory.
Kvapil’s rookie season has shown promise, with four top-10 finishes in nine starts last season, including a near win at Dover. However, this year, he has struggled for consistency, posting an average finish of 13.8 and yet to secure a win as he heads into the championship weekend as an underdog.
Earnhardt Jr. remains confident in the team’s potential, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Kvapil and his crew chief, Andrew Overstreet. “I believe in Overstreet as a crew chief… I think he’ll be a crew chief on one of our cars next year,” he stated.
Additionally, Earnhardt Jr. commended Kvapil’s professionalism amidst challenges, noting the pressure he faces. “Carson has never complained or said anything negative about his team,” he remarked, emphasizing the family’s sacrifices in pursuit of racing success.
As the Xfinity Series championship race approaches, both Earnhardt and Kvapil remain resolutely focused on achieving their shared goals, setting the stage for a significant confrontation at Phoenix Raceway.
