Larson Clinches Victory in Thrilling Andy’s Frozen Custard 300
Texas Motor Speedway, May 3, 2025 – Kyle Larson showcased his prowess and strategic racing to secure a dramatic victory in the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300, overcoming a challenging race that extended into two overtimes. This victory marks Larson’s second of the season and the 17th of his career.
Race Highlights:
Larson, substituting for the injured Connor Zilisch in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, was positioned seventh for a restart on lap 194, trailing six competitors who opted to remain on older tires. A decisive late pit stop called by crew chief Mardy Lindley proved crucial after a caution was triggered on lap 188 by Corey Day’s crash. Larson’s decision to pit positioned him favorably for the final stages of the race.
In the first overtime restart, Larson moved from third to second, before taking the lead from defending champion Sam Mayer in the second overtime. He ultimately crossed the finish line with a margin of 1.265 seconds over Taylor Gray, who climbed from fourth to finish second.
Key Quotes:
“It was a lot of survival, I felt like in that race,” Larson commented post-race. “I got in some wrecks and had to work on the car’s balance quite a bit. Thanks to JRM for letting me come run this thing today. I wish Connor was in the car, but I’m grateful they thought of me.”
Race Context:
Larson faced adversity early in the race, starting from 20th position and later serving a penalty for an uncontrolled tire. Meanwhile, Justin Allgaier dominated much of the race, leading a race-high 99 laps, before a crash on lap 153 ended his bid when he collided with another car.
“All my fault,” Allgaier said regarding the incident. “I was trying to catch back up and put myself in a bad position.”
Riley Herbst finished third, while Austin Hill and Mayer rounded out the top five. Nick Sanchez, who had been consistently in the top five, faced setbacks in the second overtime, ultimately finishing 20th.
