NASCAR Expands Xfinity Series Grid for Mexico City Race
NASCAR has announced the addition of two provisional starting spots for the Xfinity Series race in Mexico City, expanding the grid from 38 to a potential 40 entries. This decision is fueled by expectations that over 38 teams will travel to compete in the event, scheduled for June 13-15—marking the series’ return to Mexico after a 15-year absence.
The newly designated International Provisional will allow teams to enter beyond the standard limit. However, teams utilizing this provisional will face significant restrictions:
- Eligible entries will not receive prize money.
- No driver or owner points will be awarded, including stage points.
- Winners of the race will not gain credit for playoff benefits, meaning the second-place finisher will receive points typically associated with a race victory.
- Playoff points associated with stage or race wins will also be omitted for these entries.
This strategic move mirrors the Cup Series’ Open Exemption Provisional, a mechanism designed to facilitate team participation while maintaining competitive integrity.
Additionally, the Cup Series will also visit Mexico City for the first time; however, no Open Exemption Provisional requests were made for this event, as teams must submit such requests at least 90 days prior.
As anticipation builds for NASCAR’s return to the Mexican circuit, all eyes will be on how the expanded grid impacts the competitive landscape of the Xfinity Series.
