NASCAR All-Star Open: Preece’s Frustration Over Choose Marker Penalty
North Wilkesboro, NC – Ryan Preece’s hopes of advancing in the NASCAR All-Star Race were dashed after a controversial penalty during the All-Star Open. Preece, driving the Boston Common Golf Ford Mustang, was penalized for running over the designated choose marker on lap 73 while contending for a transfer spot.
Preece was in second place behind Carson Hocevar when the incident occurred. The choose box, critical for determining restart lanes, was reportedly not visible from the driver’s perspective. Following the penalty, Preece was sent to the rear of the field, effectively ending his shot at the All-Star Race.
“It’s really non-existent from inside the car; you can’t see it,” said Preece, expressing his frustration. He emphasized the need for clearer indicators for drivers if rules dictate choices on restarts. “If it’s a cone rule, then put a cone out there so we can visually see it.”
The race was significantly impacted by a caution on lap 78, caused by a crash involving Riley Herbst after contact from Michael McDowell. Hocevar ultimately secured the win, but the caution that altered the race’s dynamics coincided with Preece’s misfortune.
While acknowledging the mistake, Preece reiterated the need for better visibility of the choose marker. “Maybe we need to rethink how we do it if there is a lot of rubber caked up on it,” he added, indicating the challenges drivers face on the track.
In response to the outcry, NASCAR officials repainted the choose marker before the All-Star Race, but the question remains: how will visibility continue to be managed for the benefit of the competitors?
