Kansas Speedway Incident: Zane Smith’s Car Rolls Over in Overtime Fracas
Zane Smith’s race at Kansas Speedway took a dramatic turn on Sunday as his vehicle was involved in a harrowing rollover incident during the first overtime attempt. Smith, who had been running competitively in the top 10, found himself squeezed into the wall by John Hunter Nemechek, who made contact with Smith’s left rear quarter panel.
The collision sent Smith’s Ford onto its driver’s side, causing it to ride along the wall before overturning. The car then rolled again down the banking before coming to rest on its wheels. Smith described the experience as a “wild ride,” highlighting his frustration with the incident. “I had a decent restart going and then I just get wrecked by the [No.] 42. He just drives through me,” he stated.
The driver expressed disappointment about losing what seemed to be a promising top-10 finish, noting the strong performance of his team: “Just a bummer… we were going to have a top 10 day.” He commended his team at Front Row Motorsports for providing a competitive car, especially on mile-and-a-half tracks.
Nemechek, acknowledging the error, expressed regret via social media, explaining, “My bad. Made a mistake trying to make a move to go 3-wide into Turn 3. Apologies to the No. 38 guys and Zane. Hate the way it ended.” Both drivers were competing closely for position around the top 15 before the incident unfolded.
The incident underscores the high-stakes pressure drivers face during critical moments in races, particularly in overtime scenarios where aggressive maneuvers can lead to significant repercussions.
