Denny Hamlin Eyes Elusive NASCAR Championship at Phoenix Raceway
Phoenix Raceway— As the NASCAR Cup Series heads into its finale, veteran driver Denny Hamlin is determined to put an end to his championship drought. Competing in his 20th full season, Hamlin is looking to secure his first title against formidable rivals, including Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe and Hendrick Motorsports drivers William Byron and Kyle Larson.
“I’m definitely optimistic about it,” Hamlin remarked during Championship 4 media day. “I’ve gone through all the details, and while I feel confident, I need more track data to confirm that.”
Despite his extensive experience—this marks Hamlin’s fifth appearance in the Championship 4 since the playoff format was instituted in 2014—he has yet to capture the championship. In previous seasons, he has finished second or third four times, further adding to his sense of urgency.
“Our team has paid its dues,” Hamlin stated, emphasizing the hard work that has gone into getting to this point. “If we were to win it, we’re very deserving.”
Hamlin’s confidence stems partly from a stellar season, highlighted by six wins—the most in the series—and reaching the milestone of 60 career victories, a feat he initially doubted he could achieve this year. “I feel a lot looser this time around,” he noted, reflecting a shift in mindset compared to previous championship attempts.
Among the title contenders, Hamlin is the oldest at 44, with Byron (27), Larson (33), and Briscoe (30) making up a younger field. Larson is the only driver among them to have won a championship, achieving this in 2021.
Hamlin recognized the pressure resting on his shoulders, stating, “I would think it would probably be me, simply because of the time left… Is this my last opportunity or not?”
As the race approaches, all eyes will be on Hamlin as he seeks to transform years of close calls into a championship victory.
