Porsche Dominates Opening Stages at Sebring

Sebring, FL – In a commanding performance, the two Porsche 963s, fielded by Penske, secured the top two positions after three hours of the Sebring 12-hour race. Laurin Heinrich led the charge, advancing from ninth at the race’s start to seize the lead following a strategic pass on Louis Deletraz’s Cadillac.

Heinrich’s drive highlighted the #7 Porsche’s resurgence after a drive-through penalty compromised its position earlier in the race. He opened up a significant 12-second gap before the field was neutralized by a safety car due to a serious multi-car incident at the final corner.

Critical Incidents Impact Race Order

The early stages of the race saw the first major incident when Henrik Hedman’s DragonSpeed team faced a severe impact into the barriers, triggered by a collision with PR1’s Parker Thompson. Although Hedman emerged unscathed, the incident led to both cars’ retirement and a caution period.

Thompson received a five-minute stop-go penalty for his role, dropping him to 11th in LMP2, while the #10 Wayne Taylor Cadillac suffered damage during the safety car queue, necessitating immediate repairs. It dropped from a strong position to ninth before recovering to sixth.

As the third hour concluded, another incident occurred involving Sebastien Priaulx’s Ford Mustang and Alessandro Pier Guidi’s Ferrari. The Ferrari sustained terminal damage after being struck by Russell Ward in the Winward Mercedes-AMG, eliminating both cars from contention. Priaulx later remarked on the contact, attributing it to ongoing handling issues.

Current Standings and Class Leaders

At the time of the safety car, the running order in GTP saw the #60 Acura MSR ARX-06 in fourth, followed by the #24 BMW in fifth. In LMP2, the #8 Tower ORECA led, with United’s #22 in second and the AO’s vehicle in third.

In GTD Pro, Manthey’s Klaus Bachler maintained a strong position, leading with the #911 “Grello” 911, followed by the #77 AO Porsche. In GTD, AF Corse’s #21 Ferrari stood out, taking leadership over the Heart of Racing Aston Martin.

As the race continues into its later stages, the dynamic order showcases the unpredictable nature of endurance racing, with strategy and timing set to play crucial roles in determining the eventual winners.
