Ginetta Seeks New Customer Teams as LMP3 Market Tightens
Yorkshire-based sportscar manufacturer Ginetta is exploring new partnerships to return the G61-LT-P3 Evo LMP3 to competitive racing amid a challenging market landscape. Following DKR Engineering’s transition to Ligier for the 2026 season, Ginetta finds itself without customer representation in both the Le Mans Cup and European Le Mans Series (ELMS).
During the 2025 season, DKR Engineering secured modest success with Ginetta’s LMP3 offerings, including a Pro/Am class victory at the prestigious Circuit de la Sarthe. However, with Ligier dominating the customer base and other brands like Duqueine and ADESS struggling, Ginetta’s market position has diminished.
Mike Simpson, Ginetta’s chief executive of motorsport, emphasized, “If I am being brutally honest, I have demand to put a program together, but the business needs to be correct for me.” This statement underscores the company’s focus on operational viability rather than simply increasing sales. Simpson noted previous collaborations with DKR, asserting a desire for mutually beneficial partnerships that align with the potential for on-track success.
Despite the pressurized market, Simpson mentioned that opportunities for partial-season campaigns or one-off race entries exist later in the year, though he remains skeptical about their feasibility. He criticized Ligier’s “stranglehold on the market,” citing an influx of rental inquiries rather than outright sales.
“We’ve put a lot of money into the cars; I need that return on investment,” Simpson remarked, revealing a pragmatic approach to Ginetta’s future in LMP3. He expressed satisfaction with technical developments, including plans for the upcoming G62 model targeted at the American racing scene.
While acknowledging LMP3’s value as a driver development platform, Simpson pointed out that teams need to consistently compete at the top to attract prominent drivers: “Without topping the times each session, it’s hard to fill the seats with the fastest drivers.” He concluded by reiterating the need for increased car distribution and team participation to elevate Ginetta’s competitive profile.
In this evolving landscape, Ginetta remains committed to its long-term strategy, advocating for the distinctive advantages of its LMP3 cars while navigating the challenges posed by established competitors.
