FIA WEC Implementing Revised Balance of Performance System for 2026

The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) is set to unveil a restructured Balance of Performance (BoP) system for the 2026 season, aiming to enhance competitiveness and address current shortcomings. Acknowledging the inadequacies of the existing framework, ACO President Pierre Fillon stated in an interview during the 2025 6 Hours of Fuji that the existing BoP “clearly didn’t work.”

Fillon emphasized a shift from BoP terminology to “performance management,” highlighting collaborative efforts among the ACO, FIA, and IMSA to devise a more straightforward approach. Manufacturer feedback has been pivotal, as Fillon disclosed that they voted against eliminating BoP in a recent Paris meeting.

Qualifying results at Fuji revealed that almost all entrants were within a second of each other, although discrepancies between teammates exceeded half a second—a concern Fillon noted while defending the current system.

“The issue lies not within the BoP itself but rather in the operational process behind it,” he stated. “Our aim is to refine this process, though it’s a challenging task to balance numerous variables affecting race outcomes.”

Fillon indicated that while BoP accounts for only 30% of race results, other factors such as strategy, tire choice, and driver performance play significant roles. The reworked BoP aims to more effectively integrate these components, enhancing overall racing quality and spectator engagement.
