IMSA Pushes Introduction of BMW M2 Racing Class to May at COTA
The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has confirmed the debut of the new BMW M2 Racing class at the Airbnb Endurance Challenge, scheduled for May 8-10 at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). This decision follows discussions with BMW M Motorsport and various stakeholders, aimed at ensuring a robust launch for the new category.
Originally planned for the first endurance round at Sebring International Raceway, the M2 class’s debut has been postponed, allowing teams additional time for testing. This adjustment, according to IMSA, is crucial for teams to prepare adequately for endurance racing.
“By working closely with BMW and our stakeholders, we’ve identified that the second Airbnb Endurance Challenge Event at COTA provides the most stable and competitive environment for the introduction of the BMW M2 Racing into IMSA endurance racing,” stated IMSA President John Doonan. This move is complemented by a streamlined budget for the inaugural year due to the reduction of one endurance event from the schedule.
The BMW M2 class will now feature a three-race calendar that includes COTA, Virginia International Raceway from June 19-21, and Road America from August 14-16. Additionally, there remains the potential for a fourth event later in the season. Notably, the top three finishers in the M2 class will earn an exclusive GT4 test day at The Thermal Club in California, facilitating their progression in the sport.
This strategic approach aims to cultivate a sustainable and competitive championship.
