Dillmann Aims for Success at Mosport in Search of Second IMSA Title
Tom Dillmann, the reigning IMSA WeatherTech LMP2 Champion, is gearing up for a critical race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) as he aims to defend his title. Last year, Dillmann, alongside Inter Europol Competition, captured his first-ever victory in Canada at this storied circuit, a pivotal moment that contributed significantly to their championship success.
Dillmann and former teammate Nick Boulle won the LMP2 class last season in an event that marked the category’s prominence in IMSA. This season, Dillmann has expanded his résumé with class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Sebring 12 Hours, bolstering his confidence heading into CTMP.
“The team has been strong every weekend,” Dillmann remarked. “We joke that when we avoid technical issues, we win or finish second. This year has seen three technical issues: two in IMSA and one in Europe. We know we have a quick car and execute well."
However, mechanical challenges have impeded their progress, notably at Daytona and the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) opener in Catalunya. At Watkins Glen, a clutch issue and a pit crew infraction dashed hopes for a podium despite an effective race strategy.
Currently, Dillmann sits fifth in the LMP2 Drivers’ Championship, trailing leader Daniel Goldburg by 166 points with just three races following Mosport. His new co-driver, Jeremy Clarke, has impressed throughout the season and even took the win at Sebring in his IMSA debut.
“He surprised a lot of people,” Dillmann said of Clarke. “His dedication in learning tracks and improving is evident.”
As Dillmann prepares for the Chevrolet Grand Prix, securing track position and a fast car will be essential for success. The LMP2 class will lead the grid, simplifying the start and early race dynamics as they will not contend with GTP cars on cold tires.
Dillmann emphasized the importance of strategy, particularly during driver changes, which may be more critical than fuel management. Clean air on track will be vital, as overtaking cars in front is challenging due to significant understeer.
Navigating GT traffic will also be a factor at Mosport, especially in the tight confines of its first two corners. “Turn one is straightforward; we need to back off if we can’t overtake before the corner. But this can result in a significant loss,” he noted, alluding to the complexities of multi-class racing.
As the season progresses, Dillmann recognizes that a strong result in Canada is imperative to maintain his championship hopes. With his eyes set on a repeat title, the stakes are high as he and Inter Europol aim for another successful outing.
