IMSA Monterey SportsCar Championship: Qualifying Highlights
Laguna Seca, CA — Dries Vanthoor and BMW M Team RLL continued their dominance in the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, securing their fourth consecutive pole position. The #24 BMW M Hybrid V8, driven by Vanthoor and Philipp Eng, topped the GTP qualifying session with a lap of 1:12.854—a margin of just five-thousandths of a second over the nearest competitor.
Vanthoor’s provisional pole came halfway through the 15-minute session, setting him just four-tenths off the GTP course record from the previous year. Matt Campbell in the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 claimed second on the grid with a 1:12.859. Following closely was the #7 Penske Porsche, driven by Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr, who secured third with a time of 1:12.932.
Ricky Taylor and the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac V-Series.R posted the fourth-fastest time. Tom Blomqvist rounded out the top five in the #60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06, while Sheldon van der Linde qualified sixth in the second BMW.
The remainder of the top ten included Jordan Taylor, Nick Yelloly, Frederik Vesti, and Gianmaria Bruni, while the #23 Aston Martin THOR Team Valkyrie of Roman de Angelis managed to qualify last but stayed within a second of the more established hybrid LMDh competitors.
In GTD PRO, Giacomo Altoe delivered a stellar performance for DragonSpeed, clinching the class pole with a 1:20.608 in the #81 Ferrari 296 GT3. This marks his second consecutive pole, overcoming challenges from the Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.Rs. Alexander Sims initially set a strong provisional pole but finished third after Dan Harper’s #48 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO posted a 1:20.644.
GTD qualifying was led by Kenton Koch of Korthoff Competition Motors in the #32 Mercedes-AMG GT3, who set a new class lap record at 1:20.810. He edged out Alec Udell in the #36 DXDT Racing Corvette by just nine milliseconds. Casper Stevenson’s #27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 followed in third, with Russell Ward in the #57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG rounding out the top five.
The Monterey SportsCar Championship race is set to begin tomorrow at 12:10 PM PT, with coverage available on the IMSA YouTube channel, IMSA.TV, and Peacock.
