Garage 59 Joins FIA WEC as McLaren’s New LMGT3 Partner

Garage 59 has officially taken the helm as McLaren Automotive’s partner in the LMGT3 category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), succeeding United Autosports. This strategic move positions the team as a key player ahead of its debut season.

Led by Andrew Kirkaldy and Chris Goodwin, who were integral to McLaren’s previous GT efforts, Garage 59 brings significant experience as it steps into world championship competition. Kirkaldy commented, “We’re settling in alright… Running a car is something we’re relaxed about. It’s just rules, regulations, and energy management.” The team has already completed essential testing in Qatar and Imola, preparing to tackle unique challenges presented by WEC’s regulations and tire management.

In ensuring a seamless transition, Garage 59 collaborated closely with United Autosports, leveraging their data and race insights. “They were very helpful… All information has come from United to us,” Kirkaldy noted. Furthermore, McLaren has provided ongoing support, with personnel integrated into Garage 59’s operations to facilitate a deep understanding of the series.

Giorgio Sanna, McLaren’s newly appointed head of motorsport, expressed confidence in Garage 59’s ability to adapt rapidly and compete effectively. “We remain optimistic for the start of the season… the team has worked hard to improve their organization,” Sanna stated. He emphasized the rigorous performance standards in the GT World Challenge Europe and indicated that Garage 59’s past successes should translate well into WEC competition.

Looking ahead, McLaren intends to maintain a long-term commitment to LMGT3 with Garage 59, aiming for an enduring partnership that aligns with its broader strategy to enhance customer support and consolidate GT3 operations. Sanna clarified, “The priority for us right now is more on quality than quantity in GT3,” indicating a focus on a mature and successful program.

As the season approaches, Garage 59 stands poised to make a significant impact in the LMGT3 class, reinforcing McLaren’s growing presence in endurance racing.
