FIA World Endurance Championship: Garage 59’s Promising Start Ends in Heartbreak at Imola
Imola, Italy – The FIA World Endurance Championship kicked off its 2026 season with a thrilling opener at Imola, where Garage 59’s #10 McLaren LMGT3 Evo showcased impressive speed but ultimately suffered from mechanical failure, resulting in a disappointing 13th-place finish.
Race Overview:
Garage 59 made a substantial mark during the event, with Tom Fleming securing pole position in Hyperpole, aided by Antares Au’s last-minute lap in qualifying. Au led the early stages, and after a slip during pit stops, Fleming executed a critical overtaking maneuver on TF Sport’s Jonny Edgar to reclaim the lead.
Despite commanding performance, the race turned tragic for the team when Marvin Kirchhöfer, the McLaren factory driver, encountered a broken alternator with just 35 minutes left, forcing him to return to the pits. The result was a heart-wrenching finish for the promising newcomers, who had led much of the race.
“I’m very disappointed,” Kirchhöfer expressed post-race. “It felt so good until then, and I’m incredibly proud of the outstanding job by the whole team.”
The standing after the opening race puts Garage 59 at a 24-point deficit in the championship, but their performance suggests they could remain competitive throughout the season. Kirchhöfer praised his teammates, mentioning their solid efforts amid the intensity of the race.
Winning Team:
Victory in Imola went to the #69 WRT BMW M4 LMGT3 Evo, driven by Dan Harper, Anthony McIntosh, and Parker Thompson. This team, also featuring several newcomers, capitalized on the McLaren’s misfortune, largely maintaining their place among the podium contenders throughout the race.
“Our focus was on making zero mistakes,” Harper stated after the win. “I didn’t expect to be so close to the McLaren after the final pit stop.”
Technical Highlights:
The race showcased varying tire strategies, with the BMW ultimately emerging as a strategic victor. Harper noted, “I had to save energy, which made it tricky to defend against Nicky [Catsburg] at times, but we managed to keep it clean.”
The implications of this race extend beyond immediate results, indicating a competitive season ahead as the LMGT3 field demonstrated diverse capabilities. McLaren, Corvette, Ford, and others had spells of dominance, while some expected frontrunners like Aston Martin and Ferrari faced challenges.
Looking Ahead:
As the championship progresses, the first event has laid a foundation for an exciting season. With seven races remaining, Garage 59 possesses the potential to turn their fortunes around, while teams like WRT have demonstrated that they can secure victories amidst tough competition.
“We’ll take a night or two to digest this, but I’m confident we will bounce back stronger,” Kirchhöfer concluded.
