Honda Unveils Prelude-GT for SUPER GT Series
Tokyo, Japan – Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has officially announced the Prelude-GT, its new GT500 contender set to compete in the Autobacs SUPER GT Series starting in 2026. The Prelude-GT will make its track debut for shakedown testing at Sportsland Sugo tomorrow.
Transitioning from Civic Type R-GT
The Prelude-GT replaces the Civic Type R-GT, which recently faced tough competition from the Toyota GR Supra GT500 and Nissan Z NISMO GT500. Despite a strong start that included a victory at Fuji Speedway in August 2024 and a runner-up finish in the championship, Honda’s efforts have dwindled, risking a winless season—something not seen since 2016.
Specifications and Design
The Prelude-GT is based on a three-door hybrid sports coupe platform, sharing its architecture with the current Civic. This model, the sixth-generation “BF1,” officially launched in Japan and North America on September 4, 2025, with a European debut slated for 2026. The change comes as SUPER GT implements a four-year aerodynamic development freeze beginning in 2026, compelling Honda to pivot towards developing a fresh design rather than continuing with the underperforming Civic.
Future Prospects
Details on the Prelude-GT’s engine specifications and driver lineup will be disclosed in the coming months. HRC’s strategic focus on the Prelude-GT is intended to leverage its more conventional coupe design for enhanced performance potential in the competitive GT500 class.
As the countdown to its racing debut begins, expectations are set high for Honda’s latest offering in the venerable SUPER GT Series.
