IMSA and NASA Forge Innovative Partnership for Technical Advancement

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has announced a multi-year technical partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) through a newly established ‘Space Act Partnership.’ This collaboration aims to enhance telemetry, diagnostics, and sensor technologies by leveraging expertise from both the motorsport and aerospace industries.

Under the agreement, IMSA and NASA will conduct biannual Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), alternating between NASA facilities and IMSA events. Key topics will include machine learning applications for diagnostics, wireless networking advancements, and RFID utilization.

IMSA President John Doonan emphasized the potential for cross-industry learning: “This partnership represents a unique fusion of aerospace and motorsports innovation,” he stated. “We’re proud to collaborate with NASA to explore how our respective approaches to telemetry and diagnostics can inform and elevate each other’s missions.”

NASA will share insights from its telemetry data acquisition and prognostics related to human spaceflight programs, while IMSA will contribute its expertise in high-speed racing telemetry and rapid-response data systems. The initial TIM is set for NASA’s Ames Research Center, with future sessions scheduled for IMSA race events and NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Notably, no funding will be exchanged between the organizations, with each covering its costs independently. This partnership aligns with NASA’s strategy of engaging with non-traditional collaborators and reflects IMSA’s commitment to advancing competition, innovation, and safety in sports car racing.

Additionally, IMSA has recently secured a multi-year marketing agreement with UK-based Sentronics, a global provider of ultrasonic fluid flow sensors, designating them as a Proud Technology Supplier. The organization is also expanding its collaboration with BDO USA, naming the firm as the Official Digital Transformation Partner of IMSA Labs.

This strategic approach underscores IMSA’s dedication to embracing new technologies that will propel the sports car racing sector forward.
