Introduction of Legends of Le Mans Series Set for 2026

In a significant enhancement to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the Legends of Le Mans series will debut in 2026, uniting iconic LMP1, LMP2, and LMGTE cars from 2000 to 2020. The initiative, created by Peter Auto, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, and Le Mans Endurance Management, aims to revive the legacy of historic endurance racing.

Event Structure and Schedule

The Legends of Le Mans series will kick off at three WEC races—Imola, Spa, and Bahrain—alongside an annual feature at the Le Mans Classic – Legend Edition in July. The series will showcase a maximum grid of 34 cars, generating excitement and nostalgia among fans.

Marc Ouayoun, Managing Director of Peter Auto, emphasized the importance of these historic machines: “To see them back on track at the start of today’s biggest endurance championship is to offer a unique experience to drivers and spectators.”

Technical Insights and Participant Engagement

The series will include LMP1 cars constructed between 2006 and 2012, LMP2 models from 2006 to 2015, and GTE vehicles from 2011 to 2020, with a confirmed early entry list featuring notable manufacturers such as Peugeot, Pescarolo OAK, and Oreca.

Chiara Viani-Pericchi, leading the series development, noted, “Entries are very strong, we are pretty much full with the LMP1s and LMP2s.” However, some team commitments have pushed entries for a few contenders back to 2027 due to logistical challenges.

Collaborations and Regulations

The competition will be governed by a set of regulations aimed at enhancing participant experience and safety. Partnerships with Michelin and TotalEnergies Elf for tire and fuel provisions have been established. Warmers will be permitted in the paddock to ensure car readiness, reflecting a commitment to operational safety.

Viani-Pericchi has held discussions with car owners and major teams, stating, “We want to ensure that the focus is on the enjoyment of the race meetings as well as the competition and, of course, safety.”

Future Outlook

As preparations ramp up, details regarding the series ambassador and specific entry lists will be unveiled in the coming weeks. The Legends of Le Mans is poised to offer a unique and thrilling experience, linking the storied past of endurance racing with its vibrant future.
