NLS 9 Preview: High-Profile Returns and Historic Moments in Motorsport

As the NLS 9 approaches, all eyes are on the debut of Max Verstappen in the GT3 category. However, another noteworthy competitor making headlines is Jann Mardenborough, the former Nissan factory driver and GT Academy champion, who has secured his ‘Ring permit and will race the #9 HRT Ford Mustang GT3 alongside Dennis Fetzer and Fabio Scherer.

Mardenborough’s return to the Nürburgring circuit comes nearly a decade after a tragic incident in March 2015 when his Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 crashed, resulting in the death of spectator Andy Gehrmann and injuries to two others. This event prompted significant safety reforms at the circuit, including power reductions for SP9 cars and the imposition of temporary speed limits at critical sections like Flugplatz and Dottinger Höhe, aimed at enhancing spectator safety.

The #9 Mustang is among a record 110-car entry list for NLS 9, which also features the NLS8-winning #6 car. This marks both a substantial competitive environment and a pivotal moment for Mardenborough as he returns to professional racing after a long hiatus. In reflecting on his comeback, Mardenborough stated, “I’m excited but also aware of the challenges ahead. Racing at the Nürburgring has always been a passion of mine.”

The upcoming race not only highlights the evolving nature of GT3 racing but also serves as a reminder of the imperative for ongoing safety improvements in motorsport. With Mardenborough’s experience and Verstappen’s high-profile debut, NLS 9 is set to be a landmark event in the world of motorsports.
