HRT Ford Racing Prepares for Historic Bathurst 12 Hour Debut

Mount Panorama, Australia – HRT Ford Racing enters the Bathurst 12 Hour this weekend, marking Ford’s inaugural foray into the event’s Pro category with the Mustang GT3. This venture symbolizes a significant revival for the American manufacturer in Australian motorsport, following a period of diminished participation post-COVID-19.

The #64 Mustang GT3 will be piloted by factory drivers Christopher Mies and Dennis Olsen, alongside Australian Supercars star Broc Feeney. Mies, a two-time Bathurst 12 Hour champion, expressed excitement about competing in Ford’s latest machine: “When I signed with Ford, I always dreamed of going to Bathurst with our Mustang GT3. It’s great to finally be part of it,” Mies stated.

This year’s race showcases a competitive field of 35 cars, the largest since 2020, featuring entries from eight manufacturers in the Pro category, signaling a resurgence of interest among teams and fans alike. Mies emphasized the improved quality of competition: “We have one of the best fields the race has ever had, in terms of drivers and manufacturers,” he asserted.

As Ford Racing debuts in the SRO’s Intercontinental GT Challenge, the team aims to compete in further events, including the ADAC 24H Nürburgring and the 24 Hours of Spa later this year. Mies noted the benefit of increased racing opportunities, albeit balancing commitments in IMSA’s GTD Pro class.

The Bathurst 12 Hour is particularly challenging due to its truncated practice sessions. Unlike other events, the team is barred from private practice, meaning their only track time occurs just before the race. Mies acknowledged the difficulties but assured confidence in the team’s preparedness: “We have Ford Racing supporting us, so although the car has never been there before, we are quite well prepared.”

Tire strategy will also play a pivotal role, as the event will utilize the new Pirelli P Zero DHG tires, an unknown variable for many drivers. Mies indicated a learning curve but highlighted the team’s experience with the new compound from other series.

Meanwhile, competition with traditional rivals, including the Corvette team, suggests a revitalized atmosphere in the event. HRT’s presence at Bathurst adds to the narrative, showcasing the Mustang GT3 amidst a historical rivalry.

In preparation for the unique demands of Mount Panorama, the team is focused on optimizing setup during limited practice time, as Feeney adapts to the Mustang GT3 under pressure. Mies expressed confidence in Feeney’s adaptability: “I have no doubt that he will adapt very quickly to the car.”

With a united mission to showcase the Mustang GT3 to a captivated audience, HRT Ford Racing’s debut this weekend stands as a hopeful benchmark for the American brand’s future in international GT racing.
