Mulsanne Straight Resurfacing Enhances Le Mans Circuit
Date: August 1, 2023
Renovation efforts on the iconic Mulsanne Straight of the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans have commenced, involving significant road resurfacing aimed at improving performance and safety. The project is managed by the Syndicat Mixte du Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans and encompasses a critical section extending from the Daytona Chicane to Mulsanne Corner.
The resurfacing covers approximately 34,800 m² and features a specialized thin asphalt overlay designed for high-speed racing conditions. This innovative mix includes high-quality aggregates and specific bitumen, ensuring optimal grip and consistency. The application requires a temperature threshold of over 5°C for maximum efficacy.
The €656,300 investment will fully finance the initiative, which also incorporates ancillary work, such as restoring 21 timing loops, updating track joints, and repainting road markings with specialized circuit paint. The D338 road was closed to facilitate this work from July 21 to August 1, diverting traffic around the affected area to maintain safety during operations.
Additionally, the Le Mans Museum has temporarily relocated to a new 1,200 m² facility at the South Gate of the circuit, following the closure of the original museum for renovations. The new exhibit, themed “World Champions,” features notable vehicles that have secured major titles in Endurance and Formula 1 racing, allowing fans to connect with the sport’s rich history.
This refurbishment underscores the continuous commitment to enhancing both the safety and the allure of one of motorsport’s most prestigious venues ahead of future events.
