Toyota Celebrates Milestone in FIA WEC History with 100th Race
As Toyota marks its 100th race in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the manufacturer stands out as one of the most successful teams since its debut in 2012 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With an impressive record of 49 race wins—five of which were at Le Mans—and seven world championship titles, Toyota’s dominance in the series is unparalleled.
Since entering the championship, Toyota has consistently been a formidable contender, securing 42 pole positions and 109 podium finishes. The team experienced a remarkable 10-race win streak from 2018 to 2021, aligning its early years with an unwavering competitive edge.
Three-time Le Mans winner Kazuki Nakajima reflected on the team’s journey: “I couldn’t imagine that our programme would continue for such a long time… Thanks to Toyoda-san, our chairman, and everyone who has supported our project.” Nakajima transitioned from a part-time driver to a significant management role post-retirement, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and long-term strategy in their program’s success.
Over the years, Toyota has faced challenges, particularly at Le Mans, where near-misses in 2014, 2016, and 2017 shaped their narrative. Their first victory came in 2018, during a thrilling duel with their sister car, marking a turning point for the team. “It took a long time to achieve our biggest target,” Nakajima noted, reflecting on the intensity of internal competition that ultimately strengthened the team.
Despite recent setbacks, including runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2024, Toyota remains focused on returning to Le Mans glory. Nakajima stated, “We have been missing the win at Le Mans since 2022. This is our biggest target this year.”
In terms of championships, Toyota has triumphed in seven out of 13 possible seasonal titles since 2014. As they approach their 100th race, a new era begins, highlighted by updated branding from ‘Toyota Gazoo Racing’ to ‘Toyota Racing’ and the introduction of the TR010 Hybrid, with Ryo Hirakawa achieving a front-row qualifying spot.
With Toyota’s history of excellence and a renewed focus, the upcoming race presents an opportunity for the manufacturer to secure its 50th win, reaffirming its place in motorsports history.
As they gear up for this pivotal race, the world watches to see if Toyota will rise once more to the pinnacle of endurance racing.
