Adelson Leads Wright Motorsports into New Era
LONG BEACH, CA — Adam Adelson, at just 29 years old, has taken the helm as the youngest owner in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship history after acquiring Wright Motorsports in April 2025. The transition from founder John Wright marks a significant shift for the storied team, known for its championship pedigree.
Having worked closely with Wright in late 2024, Adelson attests to the inherent challenges in assuming dual roles of team owner and driver. “It was a bit difficult wearing both hats,” he said, acknowledging the natural dynamic shift that comes with leadership transition. This season, Adelson has refocused his efforts to reconcile his responsibilities as both a competitor and a leader.
“We have to find the balance between putting my team owner hat on and my driver hat back on,” he remarked, emphasizing his commitment to excellence on the track.
Team Expansion and Performance
Under Adelson’s guidance, Wright Motorsports is experiencing a resurgence. The team announced a strategic expansion in February, committing to full-time participation in the SRO America series. The #31 and #242 Porsche 911 GT3-R cars debuted at Sonoma, clinching second and fifth in their respective classes, a promising start to the season.
“Wright Motorsports has been considered one of the highest caliber teams in IMSA,” Adelson stated. “It was my prerogative to bring us back to the level of involvement we had before.”
Despite a tumultuous Daytona 24 Hours where the #120 car, driven by Adelson, suffered a high-speed collision, the crew rebounded at Sebring, securing a third-place finish in GTD. Adelson emphasized the need for risk-taking moving forward, stating, “We’re going to be fighting from the back foot… we may have to take a little more risk.”
Strategic Development and Support
This season sees the return of Callum Ilott as a driving coach, supplementing Adelson’s existing mentoring from Elliot Skeer. “Ilott can bring value not only as a driver but also to our overall performance,” Adelson noted. This multi-faceted approach signifies a commitment to development that aligns with the team’s ambitions.
As of now, Wright Motorsports sits seventh in the GTD Teams’ championship. With the upcoming sprint-heavy segment of the schedule at Long Beach, Adelson is poised to build on his team’s momentum, striving for further improvements against the backdrop of competitive challenges.
“We’re ready to defend our Sebring podium this Saturday,” Adelson said, reflecting the team’s resolve as they navigate the complexities of a new racing season.
