Team Penske Drivers Return to Porsche 963 at Daytona Test

Team Penske’s IndyCar duo, Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden, returned to action with the Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 during an IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona, signaling preparations for potential participation in the 2026 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Newgarden completed 43 laps, clocking a best time of 1:36.526, while McLaughlin followed closely with a best of 1:36.589 after 50 laps on the course. Both drivers were testing the newly updated Porsche 963 following its Evo ‘joker’ enhancements, along with Michelin’s improved Hypercar tire compounds.

Newgarden offered positive feedback on the updates, stating, “It feels better than last time I was in it… The development steps that they’ve taken feel really positive so far.” He described the new tire as “more stable” and “easier to get up to temp,” which should enhance performance during the upcoming races.

Reflecting on his previous victory at the Rolex 24 in 2024, Newgarden acknowledged his limited contributions during that race but expressed pride in the team’s overall success. He stated, “I was more just proud of the work that everybody else did… It makes you just as happy and fulfilled.”

McLaughlin, who is seeking his first experience in a premier class car at the Rolex 24, expressed enthusiasm for the event. “It’s just a great start to the year… regardless of what class you’re in, you’re competing for a very expensive watch at the end of it,” he remarked.

The 2026 Rolex 24 remains in speculation regarding driver line-ups, yet both McLaughlin and Newgarden’s performance at this test positions them favorably for future endurance racing opportunities with Porsche.

McLaughlin also highlighted his recent experience in the Suzuka 1000km, where he achieved a historic podium finish for an American car, reinforcing his desire to continue participating in endurance racing alongside his IndyCar commitments.

As preparations for the Rolex 24 progress, both drivers remain focused on delivering strong performances to secure their spots in the competitive lineup of factory Porsche prototypes.
