Location: Le Mans, France

Team Penske is reportedly evaluating a return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) as a privateer in the Hypercar class. Sources close to the team indicate that this initiative aligns with a partnership with Cadillac, aimed at operating a single V-Series.R car alongside Hertz Team JOTA’s factory lineup.

Penske’s interest follows a period of discussions earlier this year, where the possibility of entering a V-Series.R at the Le Mans 24 Hours was explored after Porsche announced its withdrawal from the Hypercar category in favor of the IMSA GTP series by the end of the 2025 season.

Roger Penske’s aspiration for a Le Mans victory remains strong; he is yet to secure an overall win at this iconic race. Last year, his team finished second to Ferrari’s #83 499P, reinforcing his commitment to reclaiming a top position at Le Mans.

The anticipated return could see a Penske Cadillac on the WEC grid as early as 2027, though no official plans have been confirmed for 2028. The current WEC lineup comprises 35 cars with a maximum capacity of 40. The addition of the Penske entry alongside AF Corse’s Ferrari could reinvigorate the privateer competition in the Hypercar World Cup.

A senior Penske source confirmed, “We are exploring and evaluating opportunities to return to Hypercar in pursuit of Roger’s Le Mans dream,” but clarified that there are currently “no concrete plans” for an imminent return to WEC.

Cadillac has yet to comment on the situation. However, reigning IMSA GTP champion Action Express Racing has confirmed its return to the Le Mans event next year, complementing JOTA’s factory cars. Wayne Taylor Racing, another Cadillac team, has opted not to participate, allowing Action Express to make its fourth appearance at La Sarthe.

In a related note, Lamborghini has also indicated intentions to return to the WEC’s LMGT3 category with its new Temerario GT3 platform.
