Porsche Penske Motorsport Navigates Controversy and Challenges Ahead of Long Beach

Long Beach, CA — Following a thrilling finish at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Porsche Penske Motorsport finds itself at a crossroads heading into the Grand Prix of Long Beach. The team, which boasts back-to-back IMSA WeatherTech GTP Championship titles, is under scrutiny after teammates Felipe Nasr and Kévin Estre clashed during the final hour of Sebring, leading to a controversial victory for Nasr.

During the race, Nasr defied team orders and overtook Estre with 65 minutes remaining, a decision that has sparked intense debate within the team. Competition director Jonathan Diuguid addressed the situation, emphasizing a collaborative resolution among the drivers: “There’s no hard feelings… everybody understands what the expectations are going forward,” he stated.

The dramatic conclusion saw the Porsche 963 cars dominate the race, finishing in 1-2 formation, but tensions lingered through a tense podium and subsequent drivers-only debrief. Estre and Nasr expressed their views, ultimately acknowledging that mutual respect must govern future team dynamics.

As the team prepares for Long Beach, new Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations have imposed a 45-kilogram weight increase on the 2026-spec Porsches, potentially jeopardizing their competitive edge. The vehicles will now weigh 1,100 kg, coinciding with a notable reduction in horsepower, especially impactful on the tight, technical layout of Long Beach.

Diuguid remains optimistic, asserting, “We can only do so much to beat the laws of physics,” but stressed the importance of flawless strategy and execution in overcoming the new challenges.

“Everybody’s going to work as hard as we did beforehand and be successful in the conditions that we’re given,” Diuguid concluded, reinforcing his commitment to team preparation and adaptability.
