Subaru Unveils BRZ GT300 Engine Update for 2026 SUPER GT Series
At the Tokyo Auto Salon, Subaru announced a significant update to the BRZ GT300 with the introduction of a new three-litre, flat-six boxer engine, derived from the legacy EG33 unit. This engine will replace the longstanding two-litre EJ20, which has powered every Subaru GT300 car since 1998.
The decision to transition from the EJ20, a model dating back to 1988, was driven by the desire for greater performance and competitive edge in the Autobacs SUPER GT Series. Subaru stated, “The increased engine displacement and cylinder count enhance the engine performance, while further refining the Subaru BRZ’s renowned cornering capabilities to elevate competitiveness.”
This change follows the team’s comprehensive rebuild of the BRZ GT300 around a new chassis implemented last year. Despite the engine transition, the structure of the R&D Sport team remains consistent, with 2021 GT300 Champions Takuto Iguchi and Hideki Yamauchi returning for their 12th season together. The duo aims to secure Subaru’s first championship since 2022, following a ninth-place finish in the GT300 standings last year with podiums at Suzuka and Motegi. Notably, Yamauchi holds the record for the most pole positions in the category, with a total of 16.
Management continuity is ensured, with Masahiro Ozawa remaining as General Manager. Dunlop will continue as the tire supplier for the BRZ in 2026.
In addition to the BRZ GT300 updates, Subaru also unveiled the Performance-B STI Concept for the Eneos Super Taikyu Series’ ST-Q class. This new five-door hatchback will utilize the FA24 flat-four engine, running on low-carbon E20 gasoline, and will showcase advancements in aerodynamics developed in collaboration with aerospace teams.
As Subaru prepares for the upcoming racing season, this strategic shift aims to bolster its competitive stance in the ever-evolving motorsports landscape.
