FIA WEC 2026 Tyre Allocation Changes: A New Era for the LMGT3 Class

The FIA has announced a pivotal adjustment for the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, increasing tyre allocations for the LMGT3 class, with significant implications for race strategy and dynamics. Teams will receive six additional Goodyear tyres for both six and eight-hour races, and eight extra for the ten-hour race in Qatar. An additional set will also be available for free practice sessions.

This enhanced allocation allows teams the possibility of single-stinting each tyre set, predominantly using the Medium Eagle compound, as the Hard compound previously utilized has been retired following its introduction at Interlagos last season.

The change has raised concerns among various teams about the potential reduction in strategic elements due to the decreased necessity for double or triple stints. However, Stephen Bickley, Goodyear’s head of sportscar programme, provides reassurance, stating, “I think you will see teams also trying to exploit the benefit of saving changing tyres at a pit stop.”

Bickley noted that despite the increase in tyres, strategies could still vary across teams, with some potentially opting for more frequent tyre changes to simulate sprint-race conditions. “12 seconds is still 12 seconds, and if the tyre can perform consistently for two hours, why would you change?” he explained.

The impacts of stint lengths are still being finalized, with preliminary indications suggesting they may hover around an hour. Bickley expressed eagerness to determine optimum energy usage and stint efficacy. “I’m intrigued to understand the energy usage and how long stints last,” he commented.

Looking forward, Goodyear is advancing toward the development of a new LMGT3 tyre, set to debut in 2027, aiming to blend the characteristics of both the Hard and Medium compounds while enhancing sustainability. “We’re pushing towards a more sustainable future, having tyres that perform better, for longer,” affirmed Bickley.

In addition to LMGT3 developments, Goodyear is exploring designs for Hypercar tyres, participating in testing sessions that include teams like Proton’s Porsche 963. Reports suggest that early testing results have exceeded expectations regarding performance.

As the WEC seasons evolve, Goodyear’s continued efforts to adapt and innovate reflect a competitive drive to challenge established players in the tyre market, particularly Michelin, ahead of the upcoming tender for future WEC contracts. The landscape for LMGT3 racing is set for significant transformation as teams adapt to these new regulations and strategies in the quest for endurance racing supremacy.
