Max Verstappen Returns to GT Racing at Portimão
Max Verstappen has stepped into the driver’s seat of the #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO, marking his GT World Challenge Europe debut at Portimão amidst a scheduling clash with the FIA World Endurance Championship. The Dutch driver, alongside teammate Ben Barnicoat, replaces Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella, who are tied to the FIA WEC, to complete the Pro class lineup.
Verstappen expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity: “When I saw the calendar clash, I was like, ‘I don’t mind stepping in!’” He emphasized the appeal of Portimão as a beautiful track, noting the competitive nature of the event.
During the pre-event private test, Lulham’s lap time placed the #3 Mercedes-AMG second overall. Verstappen concentrated on data collection, adapting his driving style to the layout after his experience at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. “The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is very well-balanced and competitive,” he said, adding that the warm weather conditions required careful consideration.
The three-hour race presents a unique challenge for Verstappen, who noted that it will be the shortest endurance event he has tackled thus far, necessitating a different strategic approach. “Sharing the car with teammates is something that I haven’t done much before, but I’m enjoying it,” he stated, reflecting on the dynamics of team endurance racing.
Having previously raced against Barnicoat in karting and alongside Lulham at the Nürburgring, Verstappen is relishing the chance to collaborate with familiar faces. He acknowledged the high caliber of competition, stating, “There are so many good drivers with so much experience.”
With the #3 Mercedes-AMG out of title contention, Verstappen aims for victory, remarking, “To have fun, obviously. But also the competitive animal wants to do well.” Looking ahead, he has expressed a keen interest in competing at the 24 Hours of Spa next year, positioning it as a prime opportunity to test himself further in endurance racing.
Verstappen’s participation at Portimão serves not just as a competitive endeavor, but as a potential stepping stone toward future commitments in GT racing.
