Buemi’s Future in Formula E Uncertain Amid Persistent Calendar Clashes with WEC
Sebastien Buemi has voiced concerns that ongoing scheduling conflicts between Formula E and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) could jeopardize his future in the all-electric racing series. Since Formula E’s third season, these clashes have become a recurring issue, notably affecting pivotal races, including the Mexico City round and the New York double-header that coincided with WEC events.
Drivers like Buemi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nyck de Vries, Norman Nato, and Stoffel Vandoorne have all been impacted by these calendar overlaps. Following the recent Monaco E-Prix, Buemi indicated that the persisting conflicts may force him to prioritize one championship over the other. “If they want to clash with other championships, then at some point you have to make a decision,” he stated, emphasizing the responsibility of both the FIA and Formula E to address scheduling.
This year’s Berlin double-header, scheduled to coincide with WEC’s 6 Hours of Sao Paulo, is expected to see Buemi and other drivers lean towards endurance racing. In contrast, teammate Robin Frijns has chosen to continue in Formula E, despite racing for BMW M Team WRT in WEC. Vergne and Vandoorne, engaged with Peugeot and Maserati respectively, are anticipated to compete in Berlin, as they did during last year’s clash with WEC at Spa.
Last season’s overlap allowed drivers to rush between events, but FIA regulations classify double-header weekends as a single event, thus preventing participation in more than one race. Buemi and his counterparts from Mahindra and Nissan are expected to announce their replacements shortly, with Nissan’s reserve driver Sergio Sette Camara in line to take over for Nato.
This ongoing clash not only raises concerns for drivers like Buemi but also highlights a significant structural challenge facing both championships. The resolution will determine whether Buemi can sustain his dual commitments moving forward.
